The Squall<\/em>

Our bark pitched and lolled
\nmidst breakers that rolled,
\ndark as squids ink o\u2019er the gunnels.<\/p>\n

Both larboard and lee,
\nThe sky nor the sea could nary agree
\nwhich was the charge of t’other.<\/p>\n

The toothless Bosenmate, Phigg,
\nchortled while quaffing a swig
\nof foul and treacherous grog,
\njust dipped from the quartermain hog.
\nHe exclaimed with delight,
\nhis eyes sheeny with light
\nfrom the St. Elmo\u2019s fire
\nthat danced in the wires above.<\/p>\n

“I’ve seen the likes of fjords
\n‘n dikes and sailed the blue
\nwaters down South…but I’ve never
\nskimmed through a squall such as
\nthee’n, nor dodged such devilish spouts!<\/p>\n

Tighten yer buckler, ye pewlin\u2019
\nlandlubber, we’re in for a Helluva blow!<\/p>\n

Yes, we’re in for a God-awful blow!”<\/p>\n

The wind shrod through the lines
\nthat hummed as if tines of some
\ngiant’s mad tuning fork.<\/p>\n

When Cap’n yelled out,
\n“Coming About!” and spun the wheel,
\nheelin’ the rudder.<\/p>\n

It was then that I seen that wall
\nblack and green that made my spine
\ntingle and shudder.
\nThat wall of sateen, spindrift and sheen,
\nkeen deadly for malice and murder.<\/p>\n

Down bore that black curtain that
\nmeant one thing certain.<\/p>\n

We were in for a Terrible blow!<\/p>\n

Yes, we braced for a punishing blow!<\/p>\n

That’s the last that I seen of Phigg
\nand the Cap’n and two-score other
\npoor souls. The Bark torn asunder
\nas the Wave pulled them under
\nand down to the black deep below.
\nWhy I was spared is a wonder
\nthat I ‘spect I’ll never know.<\/p>\n

Rare’s the day I don’t weep
\nfor Forever they’ll keep
\nin the rivers of deep that flow
\nin the icy cold brine below…<\/p>\n
